I loved the rain in this movie - standing in the rain for someone is about as romantic as you can get - and it reminded me a LOT of another Roman Polanski (*obligatory shiver*) movie, Death and the Maiden. That one's based on a play and I was quite surprised to find out that Dark Harbor WASN'T! As you say, I don't know how much of the gay twist was well-intentioned representation versus easy shock value (and I definitely had the depraved bisexual trope in my mind throughout), but for the low-budget-ness of it all I enjoyed it. I flicked back to the kitchen argument scene at the behest of a YouTube comment (yay YouTube piracy!) and you actually see Rickman shoot Reedus a shocked glance when he comes back with his two lobsters to find his wife still alive. Great dressing gowns and fluffy socks in this one, too.

Yeah the kitchen scene becomes a whole other thing once you know the ending!
